Universal Internet?

One of the comments in Citron's article captured my interest. The comment was by a user named "Caroline S." and she pointed out the idea of law protection for Americans only. It is true that, as Americans, we have the right to free speech  and expression, but how do you handle cyberharrassment that occurs between two people in different countries? More specifically, how do you come to a settlement between a country, such as America, that has the freedom of speech and a country, such as Canada, where freedom of speech is very limited.
The internet connects people from all across the world so a solution to this situation would be to create universal internet laws. However these laws will be set or what the consequences for certain actions will be hard to hammer out because there is so much controversy over this topic. Nevertheless, the creation of universal internet laws would somewhat overlook the conversations between citizens of different countries on social media.
The whole idea of a small government that governs the internet seems to complicated to actually happen. Even though some might think it necessary, I don't see this happening in the close future because most people probably don't even care about trolls. Honestly, I never took the time to think about trolls and anonymity before we came into this unit in class. But I am glad that this class has given me awareness about the topic.

  1. I disagree about creating laws for being on the internet. Wasn't the internet(social media) created to be able to do and say what we please? It's only fair that if this bothers individuals that they can just ignore it. Creating laws will only prevent people from actually wanting to be on the internet in the first place.
