2 out of 3

Neil Gaiman listed three characteristics you need if you want to keep a freelance job:
 - Be a good person
 - Be on time
 - To have good work
But he then explained that you don't even need all three, all you need is two. When I heard this I was in total disbelief, there's no way that those are the only things that really matter but the more I thought about it and the more I looked at real life, I saw that it was true. You only really need two of those for people to tolerate you and to keep freelance job.
I have a pretty good example in my life, I think. My freshman year in band we had a drum instructor that was nothing short of amazing. He marched in a great drum corps and also studied percussion in college, so he was extremely experienced in every aspect of drumming. However that same year he made it into Berklee college of music and so he left to further his career in percussion. The next year we had another drum instructor and he was pretty good he fit the 2 out of 3, he gave good work and was a good person but he wasn't always available and he left after our season was over. Then the next year is what I'm trying to get at. (not talking trash at all, I like the guy he's pretty cool) My band director decided to hire this one guy, he majored in percussion at CSULB and no lie he specialized in steel drums. He only had experience marching drums in high school.  I don't really know why my band director hired him but I kind of understand now. Our drum instructor fit the 2 out of 3 perfectly. He is a good guy and my band director likes him a lot, he is usually there when he needs to be, and even though he may not give the best work, he gives good enough work. We have had this guy for the past two years and it does not seem like my band director is looking to get rid of him anytime soon. So with that I realized how much the 2 out of 3 rule applies to a lot of things and may even apply to us in our future.
