The main problem is that there is so much of the stuff that we don't use in any way
There's too much surplus to justify the subsidies
Why does the government keep handing out money to farmers for growing a surplus
This has impacts on both our ecology and economy
Not to mention all of the gasoline used to fuel the farming machinery
(that one isn't necessarily corn's fault, but still)

ReplyDeleteI agree with you on how cows aren't supposed to be fed corn and that they're supposed to be fed grass. You're also right that it makes a HUGE difference in taste when you compare how beef tastes from a cow that is fed corn vs. a cow that eats grass. When I was in Spain, every cow I saw would range freely with no boundaries, but just a bunch of green land, where they ate, slept, and wandered around in. From what I saw, they ate only grass and all day. When I would eat beef in Spain, I definitely tasted huge difference. There was so much more flavor and hardly any fat in the meat. Case in point, you're right, cows should not be eating corn, they should be eating grass and getting their nutrients from that (all natural) and the taste is a bonus for us AND healthier because of the lack of fat.

Perhaps you should become a lobbyist and push for legislature that puts a ban on so much corn. The fact that it generates so much money is most likely why the government gives loans to farmers. Corn is used in so many forms, it's pretty much a basic ingredient in many products.

Never thought of corn bring bad for cows. Actually I didn't even know we were feeding cows corn. This is a good topic because not a lot of people know like me. I also didn't know that what the cows ate had such a great impact on their meat. I now want to eat meat where they didn't feed them corn.I agree with corn not being fed to animals.
