The Need For Better Nutrition

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/01/our-unsafe-food-supply-is-killing-us.html

What I find interesting about this article is that it points out that 70% of our food is processed and is harming consumer health, but the FDA and Congress do not use their authority to take action against this. The government is supposed to be protecting its citizens from harm? The government must take some kind of action to reduce the unhealthy food practices by the food industries. Most people are eating blindly and being deprived of their right to eat freely. The big problem in food politics is the fact that most people do not care about what they put in their bodies. Large food corporations are making profits and are negligent of consumer health; therefore, health costs keep rising. Processed foods have been the cause of the obesity, heart attacks, heart strokes, and other illnesses that plagues America today. The way we eat has changed compared to the way people used to eat back then. In the past, strict regulations were placed on food industries for the safety of consumers and people were able to live longer. This article provides answers to the effects of processed food in the diets of Americans and promotes healthier eating habitsIf people chose to track their nutrition, not only are they promised a longer life but the full enjoyment and appreciation of their food. This, then, would lead us into the question of whether the organic food produced by some farmers would be sufficient enough to feed millions of people. Our current food economy is able to provide cheap, efficient, and abundant food despite the health costs. Dependence of organic food would mean increased labor and land. I believe this could be possible to accomplish, but it may also cause some organic food to become popular enough that food industries would want to utilize them and put them in the market resulting in industrialized food products.

  1. You are right that many people don't care about what they put into their body, myself included. I just eat what I looks appealing to me not even considering what it can do to my health. If we all tried to take time out of our busy lives and tried to cook a healthy meal, with naturally made food, then our health costs may reduce little by little.

  3. I totally agree when you say that our government should protect us and regulate the food industries. It is also true that most people are eating blindly without questioning anything about the food. I was one of the people who eats blindly, and I still am. I feel like food industries play so much role in our lives. Like you said, food industries provide cheap, efficient, and abundance food. However, it does come with the cruelty towards the animals and health problem. In our society, those problems doesn't seem as dramatic as the increase in price of the products. I don't think that the food industries will improve because we are more considerate about time and money than we do about health and animals. What a selfish creature we are. Do you think the organic food system would be able to replace the industries that we are relying on today? Also, do you think people would want changes if they simply cannot afford it?
