Money Equals Healthy

My topic for the research paper were the effects of the food industry on the low income class of America. Surprisingly, I found that the lower class has the higher rates of obesity. I found this odd because logic told me that if a family had low income, they would probably have to eat less to save money. However, this research paper has brought new information to me and a new inspiration. The lower class are limited in their options and fast food is a viable option because it is very cheap.. Four dollars can get you four "hamburgers" from McDonald's. But this food is unhealthy and fake. The lower class is basically forced into buying fast food for their families because they cannot afford to buy healthy food or go to farmers markets to get organic food. Something should be done for these families so that they are not limited to unhealthy products. Some McDonald's are changing the way they run the restaurant and serving different foods and is a step toward the process, but I think the organic food industry needs to make their products more affordable for all. The only question is will the organic food industry survive as an industry because their market is relatively small and not everyone buys organic crops. If the lower class was capable of buying healthy products they will be able to avoid diseases such as obesity because they would be able to make their own foods free of preservatives and GMOs. Is this possible in our country or is the food industry too corrupt to let this happen?

  1. When researching my topic there was a lot of articles that focused on the eating habits of many low income families. Although, it was shocking to see the harmful effects that come with a poor diet. It is not fair that low income families do not have a chance at a healthier life style due to overpricing of organic food products. I do believe that our food industry is corrupt but if we were to shine a light on this growing problem I believe change could happen.

  2. I really like how you took the direction of the family incomes and how it effects their style of eating. It is very sad that low income families can not have the good quality food that should be affordable for everyone.

  3. First of all 4:20 ayyyyy lmao
The organic food industry will be around for quite a while
The cost of the organic goods is enough to cover any expense
Do you even know the markup percentage for organic goods
    SPOILER ITS HIGH
Organic goods salespeople actually make a lot of monies
That market is safe, despite the seemingly small consumer base
(personally I've never seen a Whole Foods with less people than what would be at a normal grocery store)

  4. I like how you talk about family incomes and how they relate to the way people buy things then the rich do.

  5. While I agree with most of what you have stated in your post, I have to disagree when you imply that GMOs can cause various diseases such as that diabetes. Most are afraid of GMOs because they do not understand what they are, there has been no valid research or study that proves GMOs can cause anything harmful to humans. In fact, GMOs can more nutritions than normal crops; not to mention, they can also be beneficial to the environment.

  6. Your topic is actually my favorite so far, but to answer your question I don't think it's possible because of the power of the food industry over our government. As long as the food industry has money to give our politicians they will have control over our food supply.
